Opportunities to Volunteer
Put your compassion, skills, and interests into action to support the LGBTQ community!
At Lyon-Martin, our volunteers are an integral part of our team helping our vibrant clinic stay on top of patient care and everyday tasks. On any given day, we have 2 to 10 volunteers helping in the clinic. Throughout the year, we rely on volunteers to help plan and execute events. Our volunteers come from all walks of life, but what they have in common is a generous heart and a desire to help women and transgender people in need.
EVENT VOLUNTEERS
Lyon-Martin has many different events throughout the year, most of which serve as major fundraisers for the clinic and our patients. All of our events are unique, a great chance to meet lots of folks within the community, and without a doubt, lots of fun!
Some annual events we support:
- SF Trans March and SF Dyke March providing Chest and Breast Exams on site
- Sistahs Steppin' in Pride
- Up Your Alley
- Folsom St. Fair
- And many more!
If you're interested in learning about events that we need your help with, please email our Volunteer Coordinator, Morgan Weinert at morgan@lyon-martin.org to be added to our upcoming events mailing list that goes out about once a month.
CLINICAL VOLUNTEERS
What are Volunteer Clinical Assistants? What do they do?
As Clinic Assistants, you will rotate through 3 departmental tracks for 20 hours total in each of the following departments:
- Front Office
- Clinic
- Mental Health or Business
This will give you a sense of our operations and the different aspects that makes a community clinic run.
Once you've completed 60 hours you are eligible to move onto Level II which has an additional training weekend requirement and 2 tracks to choose from:
Medical Assistants will be rooming patients, taking vitals, chief complaints, med list and allergies, and chaperoning procedures. You will also be trained to do specimen testing, EKGs, urine tests, and other clinical diagnostic testing. On occasion, volunteer MA's will have the opportunity to apply to become a Rapid HIV Test Counselor!
Patient Care Coordinators work closely with our Nursing staff, developing patient education material, helping to coordinate our breast health and diabetes programs, and maintaining contact and support with our chronic care patients (patients with HIV, diabetes, in recovery, chronic pain management).
Once a Level II Volunteer, you will be considered volunteer staff. We will rely on your scheduled shift in our staff scheduling and you will be included in staff functions/events. We ask that you give 60 hours in one track before moving onto another track. But by all means we want you to keep learning and be invested, so we encourage you to work all the tracks you want!
What else is required of Volunteer Clinical Assistants?
We ask that you help out with 2 events per year. Our events include big annual events like Pride (doing breast and chest exams at Dyke March and Trans March), Up Your Alley, and Folsom St. Fair. They also include more targeted community events like Transgender Health Forums, Health Fairs, and other community outreach events.
As well as attend a mandatory quarterly Volunteer meeting where we will wine and dine you (non-profit style!) while addressing any concerns, updates, interesting health stuff that may come up over time.
What's the time commitment?
We ask that you make a 6 month commitment to volunteering with a minimum of 3 hours per week. We recommend no less than a 3 hour shift at a time as it's hard to get projects and tasks fully completed in less time than that.
You will also have an allotment of Personal Time Off for you to use when needed.
How do I become a clinical volunteer?
