Staff Clinician

Job Overview

The Staff Clinician at Women’s Community Clinic and Lyon Martin Health Services acts as a clinical leader by providing quality primary care services to our patients, helping to grow the overall practice, and promoting team functioning. They provide acute and preventive care with an emphasis on gynecologic care for a broad range of cisgender women and transgender people of different ages, races/ethnicities, and socio-economic backgrounds. The Staff Clinician provides team-based care in close collaboration with nursing staff, medical assistants, and volunteer health workers. They exemplify strong technical abilities and the ability to work with vulnerable populations in a trauma-informed manner.

Key Responsibilities

Clinical:

  • Provide comprehensive care, within the scope of credentialed privileges and according to pre-arranged schedules
  • Document care promptly and accurately, and following charting protocols and applicable CA state licensing requirements. Locks clinic notes within 72 hours
  • Ensure appropriate follow-up for all aspects of ordered care (e.g., specialty referrals, laboratory results, radiology reports, etc.)
  • Develop a continuity panel of patients the size of which will be determined by supervisor using pre-determined criteria
  • Maintain productivity standards as assigned by supervisor through appropriate scheduling and monitoring of no-show rate. Complete patient sessions in a timely manner
  • Provide on-call after-hours availability on a rotating basis, as requested by supervisor
  • Provide unbiased patient education and counseling, including contraceptive education and counseling
  • Identify psychosocial factors affecting health decisions and practices, and counsel accordingly
  • Perform required procedures for the care of the population including but not limited to: intrauterine device insertion, incision and drainage of abscesses, cryotherapy, and long-acting hormonal device implantation
  • Work evening and weekends as required

Professional:

  • Meet benchmarks for applicable quality indicators as noted in the annual quality management plan. Along with colleagues, assist in continuous quality improvement through on-going problem/needs identification and problem solving
  • Attend continuing professional education programs, at the request or with the approval of supervisor, demonstrating completion of timely education to meet state licensure and other professional requirements
  • Obtain and maintain licensure, board certification, DEA registration, DEA X-waiver, and BCLS/CPR certification
  • Complete all mandatory trainings on an annual basis, including but not limited to Confidentiality, Fire Safety, Incident Reporting, Child Abuse and Maltreatment and Domestic Violence, and Infection Control
  • Perform reporting of mandated conditions as required by applicable local, state and federal laws

Leadership:

  • Provide clinical leadership to support staff, including nurses, medical assistants, patient care coordinators, front office staff and receptionists
  • Work collaboratively with mental health staff to facilitate integration between primary care and mental health in order to improve patient outcomes
  • Collaborate with client care coordinator, MAs and RNs to manage patient follow-up related to referrals, abnormal labs & findings and other clinically warranted follow-up
  • Collaborate with other staff members to return client calls, provide telephone advice & triage, and refill prescriptions
  • Mentor and evaluate students as needed
  • Maintain availability for various administrative/clinical duties as requested by supervisor.  Such duties may include case presentations; in-service training to support staff; supervision of students, interns, residents, nurses, and medical assistants; leadership/consultation to committees; attendance/speaking at fundraising events, etc.

Education and Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Education and Experience

Required:

  • Graduation from an accredited school of nursing with a master’s degree, medical school, or physician assistant program
  • Valid California professional license without any limitations to practice
  • Board certification
  • BLS/CPR certification
  • DEA Controlled Substances Registration Certificate

Preferred:

  • Experience working in a federally qualified health center
  • Experience working with populations with varying lifestyles, ages, sexual orientations, gender identities, ethnic and culture backgrounds and economic status
  • Experience working successfully with issues of substance abuse, mental health, criminal background, and other potential barriers to economic self sufficiency
  • Two years’ experience in women’s health and primary care experience, preferably in a community setting, including performing IUD insertions and long-acting hormonal device implantation

Knowledge and Skills

Required:

  • Demonstrable commitment to the mission of the organization, LGBTQI health, reproductive rights, racial justice and community-oriented primary care
  • Transgender cultural competency and ability to work with diverse populations
  • Gynecological/reproductive health expertise
  • Knowledge of co-occurring disorders and trauma informed treatment
  • Strong computer skills. Experience working with electronic health record systems

Preferred:

  • Bilingual Spanish/English
  • Proficiency in performing gynecologic procedures (e.g., colposcopy, endometrial biopsy, pelvic sonography, IUD/implant insertion and removal, Nexplanon placement)
  • Proficiency performing common primary care procedures (e.g., joint aspiration and injections, abscess management, suturing)
  • Experience using eClinicalWorks
